August 25, 2005 - The right training, at just the right time

By Dean Ryerson, for the Daily Tribune

Editor's note: The Daily Tribune will regularly run columns updating Community Progress Initiative activities in local communities.

As part of the Community Progress Initiative, Workforce Training and Education Cluster team members developed several plans to assist employers in meeting the training and professional development needs of the workforce in our community. Activities are being developed that will support the desired outcomes with output indicators to help ensure progress is being made.

One of the outcomes is to increase the awareness of current training opportunities to meet the needs of current and potential employers. Cluster team members are hearing that, while many training opportunities exist, it's hard to match the opportunities with the needs.

In response, the cluster is developing a Web page that will provide employers with a directory of training opportunities linked to specific skills, certifications and job needs. Resources will be available from Mid-State Technical College, state agencies and other private and public providers.

A second outcome will be to encourage business growth by providing data on the skill and education levels of our region's existing workforce. While the data exists through numerous sources, the cluster hopes to pull data together from various sources and enable current and future employers to see, on one document, the quality of the workforce in our area.

Working with the other Progress Initiative Cluster groups, the Workforce Training and Education team is eager to help employers meet training needs.

The cluster is open to expanding its membership. Anyone interested in joining the cluster, or visiting to learn more, is encouraged to contact the Heart of Wisconsin Business & Economic Alliance or visit http:progressinitiative.com for contact information.

Dean Ryerson, co-chairman of the Workforce Training and Education Cluster.
