August 26, 2005 - Special day to highlight community

By Deb Cleworth, Daily Tribune Staff

PORT EDWARDS - Alexander Park and the community YMCA will be hubs of activity Sunday.

The Port Edwards Community Day & Car Show will begin at 10 a.m. with a car show in the John E. Alexander South Wood County YMCA parking lot and other activities in the park and at the pool. The attractions are all part of a Community Progress Initiative effort to showcase Port Edwards.

"I would say the family part is the greater part of the day." said Dave Bruener, Port Edwards resident and member of the event organizing committee. "The car show is coming along for the ride."

The event should be a good way to draw attention to Alexander Park, which has never been used to its full potential, said Page Clark, a member of the committee.

Organizers hope to make the event an annual activity, and Clark said she'd like to get more organizations involved.

The community pool will be open for free swimming from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., waiving the normal $1 fee, said Gary Allworden, village president.

"In fact, the pool is normally closed for the year (at this time)," said Gary Allworden, village president. The Port Edwards Lions, the volunteer Fire Department and the United Methodist Church of Port Edwards will sell food and refreshments.

Ice cream will be available in a cone or bowl, said Mary Heuer, a member of the church and a Port Edwards resident since 1968.

The Education and Nurture Committee from the church will offer sugar cookies at no charge for children to adorn with frosting and decorations, Heuer said.

"We did it one time at the Rapids Mall, and it went over really well," she said. "It's something extra fun for the children to do."

Funds raised through church's sales will go to the congregation's effort to refurbish the church's youth room or to replace the church roof. The community event will be held rain or shine.
