September 15, 2005 - Vesper's community team makes progress

Ruth Cline, for the Daily Tribune

Editor's note: The Daily Tribune will regularly run columns updating Community Progress Initiative activities in local communities.

Vesper and surrounding communities form a small country area with mighty volunteers. The Vesper Area Progress Team has developed a brochure to publicize local businesses and organizations. The Vesper Area Community Fund Committee has completed a brochure and is raising money to be used for future grant-making in our area.

Our members have visited the village board, fire department, businesses and organizations to educate and inform about our progress initiative efforts.

Vesper's new library is being built. In March, we helped sponsor a family day with Friends of the Vesper Library to make money for new library shelves.

In May, we sponsored Vesper Celebration Day to bring the Vesper area together and raise funds. Area businesses, organizations and residents came together to host garage sales, a brat fry, pie and ice cream social, kids' activities, a large vendor area, car wash and much more.

Our group was at the demolition of the old hardware store, a historic building which in years past held the Vesper library. Interestingly, the new library is being built on that very spot.

History plays a big part in the Vesper area; we filmed the demolition of the old store plus gathered some historical data in hopes of starting a history group in Vesper. In July, the Vesper Fire Department held its annual picnic. Our progress committee members supported this important event by working at the food stands. We participated in the local parade and filmed this event for public-access viewing.

Vesper's Farmers Market opened on July 26. It is open 9 am to 6 p.m. Tuesdays in the Vesper Community Center Park and will run until late fall and become an annual event. In addition to selling fresh produce, the market offers artwork, plants, flowers, bison meat, maple syrup and a host of other interesting items. A kids' activity area is available in the mornings.

Bringing the community together is an important part of our goals, and we have an upcoming event open to the public.

From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Vesper Community Center, we will host a free event on behalf of the communities in and around the Vesper, Rudolph and Pittsville areas: "Using Heritage, History and Agriculture to Creatively Market Your Community and Local Events."

There will be ideas, information and an opportunity to work on your event, project, and community marketing. It includes an evening meal for the participants and child-care. Please join us.

Cline is a member of the Vesper Area Progress Team. For more information about the upcoming event in Vesper, call her at 569-4202 or e-mail her at stonegate@ tznet.com, or visit http:vesperwi.com.
