November 2, 2005 - Nekoosa Fund needs your aid

By Ruth Moody for the Daily Tribune

You must have seen the words Community Progress Initiative in the Daily Tribune, and how seven area communities are planning for the future. Some have found ways to involve their residents and organize groups of helpers.

Our Funds Committee of nine has been working since November. We have a brochure coming out that explains our endeavor and progress.

The Nekoosa initiative teams are not fully organized because they need your participation. Call the Community Foundation at 423-3863 and say you're ready to help.

The Nekoosa area endeavor encompasses the city of Nekoosa, towns of Saratoga, Port Edwards, Armenia and anyone else who considers Nekoosa their community.

The fund has awarded the following grants:

$1,000 - Nekoosa Veterans of Foreign Wars, for a memorial in Riverside Park to honor all veterans.

$1,000 - to install a drinking fountain along the Nekoosa bike trail.

$1,000 - toward Wakely Bridge repairs

These projects are exactly what the Community Fund is about.

The Barker-Mead families donated $5,000 to start and promised matching funds to $20,000. We have only until Dec. 31, 2006, to raise some serious funds of our own to initiate projects for our communities.

I have heard people say, "This is only a project for rich people. I don't have thousands of dollars to share." Well, I don't have thousands of dollars to share, either, but when I want to plant a garden, I must invest in the seeds. I don't expect my neighbors or strangers to buy the seeds for me.

You can make a difference by helping initiate projects with a donation of $5, $10, $25 or more before Dec. 31, 2006. I'm writing this to make everyone aware of the wonderful way in which each of us can help.
