Breaking News November 10, 2005 - Port Edwards reaches fundraising target Daily Tribune Staff PORT EDWARDS - A fundraising committee has reached its $30,000 matching goal for the Port Edwards Community Endowment Fund, Community Progress Initiative officials said in a news release. Donations to the fund were matched by the Gerard and Doris Veneman Family Fund, up to $10,000; and by the Barker Mead Fund, up to $20,000, according to a Community Foundation of South Wood County news release. The matching gifts meant, for example, a donation of $30 was turned into a $120 contribution. More than 100 Port Edwards residents participated, and as of Wednesday, a total of more than $40,000 was donated to Port Edward's endowment fund. In addition, the Veneman Family Fund through the Community Foundation, will match up to another $5,000 in donations, the Community Foundation announced Wednesday. Money donated to the Port Edwards fund will help establish an endowment that will be used to provide grants for community improvement. The endowment fund will stay in the community in a permanent account. And the money donated will serve as the principal balance that will never be spent. Instead, a portion of the fund's earnings will be distributed as grants, according to the release. A fund committee of seven Port Edwards residents will review grant applications and determine where the money will be distributed. "Seeing these funds grow and knowing that they will be here forever to help the community is a tremendous feeling," said Kelly Lucas, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of South Wood County, in a news release. Six other communities in the south Wood County and northern Adams County areas - Nekoosa,Pittsville, Rome, Rudolph, Vesper and Wisconsin Rapids - are working to raise money for their community funds.
