December 23, 2005 - Pittsville progress team has big plans

By Pittsville Progress Team

Editor's note: The Daily Tribune publishes weekly columns updating Community Progress Initiative activities in local communities. The following was submitted by the Pittsville Community Progress team.

PITTSVILLE -- What started months ago with a community meeting has begun to show progress here in Pittsville.

Interested people have formed a committee to work on long-term goals for development in the Pittsville area. Using the Pittsville School District as our boundary, we have outlined a number of projects we would like to update you on.

We have looked at supporting our business community and other organizations that exist in our area. Feedback from the first community meeting showed that support for local business was only one of the areas that needed work. With the cooperation and support of the local business community, we are currently working on the following:

    • Recognition of a business/organization of the month, or possibly of the week, depending on the amount of information we receive. This will highlight an organization/business, recognizing owners, employees, volunteers, type of services offered, history, mailing contact information and what they foresee as their future. John and Gale Baum will head up this project.

    • Development of a Pittsville-area brochure. This colorful and informative flyer will outline statistical data and be a resource guide for visitors, potential residents and hopefully new business interests. The interior will identify as many businesses and organizations that we can within the boundaries of the school district. This brochure is in "draft format" presently and awaiting review by all the organizations listed. A copy of this flyer will be available for inspection at the city clerk's office and the Fire Department.

    • Construction of a local kiosk (an open pavilion used as a newsstand) -- a project funded by a grant from the Community Foundation. This will be an area where local items of interest may be posted for locals as well as visitors to see.

    • Better marketing of "the center of the state." This is what we are known for, but locally we need to publicize this fact better. A local historical marker is a possibility for this project.

Funding options for all of these ideas also is an ongoing part of the project. These are four of the major projects we are working on.

If you would like to be involved in any of these projects or require more information, please feel free to contact any of the following individuals: Jerry Minor, Bob Black, Sheryl Hiles, Richard Woiak, Duane Becker, and John and Gayle Baum, the people who submitted this column.
