Breaking News January 5, 2006 - Rome group to develop community calendar By Kaye Eckert, for the Daily Tribune The Rome Community Progress Initiative plans to develop a community calendar intended to promote Rome's local events for this year and 2007. A communitywide "Calendar Party" is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Rome Municipal Building. Representatives from all local organizations and businesses are encouraged to bring their plans and dates of upcoming events and meetings. Those unable to attend may call Sue Powers at 325-5647 or e-mail at s2x4@wctc.net before the meeting with plans they would like included in the calendar. The idea of a community calendar has been talked about for some time, but no individual or group has ever put one together, said Sharon McCray, co-organizer with Arlene Scalzo of the Rome Is More Team. Frequently, there are conflicts with two organizations planning events on the same day. But sometimes it can be productive to have events like fundraisers held at the same time because people attending one might stop at the other. Scalzo believes having a calendar, which shows meetings and events open to the public, can help unite the community as well as communicate things going on. Scalzo also is on the Connections Committee that functions to keep all areas of Rome connected and participating and informed. Although we're a relatively small community, Rome comprises a large area. With a diverse population, Rome offers many things to do, organizations to join and functions to attend. Knowing what and when things are happening via a community calendar will give people here and in surrounding areas a full picture of social, educational and service opportunities. Of special interest to local businesses, this event will include a brief presentation on the creation of a Heart of Wisconsin Business & Economic Alliance satellite in Rome. This will be an excellent opportunity for local businesses to get together, hear information firsthand and learn what this will mean to the Rome community. The Rome is More Team will furnish refreshments and invites businesses and organizations to attend. People are asked to bring their community spirit and event dates and join in the party of developing the 2006-2007 Rome community calendar! Kaye Eckert is a member of the Rome is More Team. |
