February 3, 2006 - Snow sculpting contest takes shape

By: Daily Tribune Staff

It might not be too late to sign up to compete in the Wisconsin Rapids Snow Sculpture Spectacular. On Saturday, 19 teams are registered to compete from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. as they shape and sculpt piles of snow in Veterans Memorial Park.

"We have room for one more team," said Phil Hartley, an organizer. "We're excited about that. We had three to four teams sign up just this week."

Organizers had been worried about the event because of a mild winter, but snow came just in time last weekend for the event to make its debut. There are few limits to what teams can shape in the snow.

"Creativity is up to them. Props and colors are allowed," Hartley said.

Sculptures will be judged in artistic and technical categories. First-, second- and third-place winners will receive cash prizes of $100, $75 and $50.

"Aside from the cash, it's just the pride of saying you are the 2006 Snow Sculpture Spectacular champion," Hartley said.

Professional snow sculptors from Team USA also will be present to watch and give tips. The team arrived Wednesday and has been working on a block of snow to create a cranberry design.
