Breaking News May 1, 2006 - 'Gimme $10' campaign helps Nekoosa grow By: Ruth Moody, for the Daily Tribune Editor's note: The Daily Tribune will regularly publish columns updating Community Progress Initiative activities and the work of its groups in local communities. As a member of the Nekoosa Area Progress Fund Committee, I am thrilled to announce the "Gimme $10" campaign. This campaign will support the Nekoosa Area Community Progress Fund, designated to raising money and making grants for unique community improvement opportunities here at "home." The Nekoosa area is very important to many people, and we want to see it prosper now and for future generations. The Community Progress Initiative is all about making our communities better -- now and for the future. The Nekoosa Area Progress Fund has been created to benefit those who live, work and play in the Nekoosa area, including the towns of Saratoga, Port Edwards and Armenia. Our fund committee spent time brainstorming ideas to raise dollars for this unique opportunity. We soon realized that this is something everyone in our area can participate in, and it's an opportunity that everyone can reap rewards from. If everyone in the Nekoosa area and the towns of Saratoga, Port Edwards and Armenia give a minimum of $10, together we can meet our goal of $20,000. Donations will be doubled by the Barker Mead Fund so that the community will have $40,000 for the fund to earn dividends and make grants. The beauty of an endowment fund is its ability to grow in principal while giving out grants every year. Initially, a $40,000 fund can provide approximately $2,000 in grants per year. In 50 years, the fund will grow to more than $107,000 in principal. During those 50 years, the fund will distribute more than $169,000 in grants for local community improvement projects. All donations will be matched by the Barker Mead Fund through Community Foundation of South Wood County, up to $20,000, now through December. If you donate $50, the Barker Mead Fund will match it with $50, and the fund will grow by $100. Now is the perfect time to donate and know that your gift will be doubled. All donations to the Nekoosa Area Progress Fund are combined into a permanent account, and the principal balance is never spent; it is "endowed" and available for growth forever. As the fund earns interest and dividends over time, a portion is distributed annually in the form of grants for improvement projects in Nekoosa and the towns of Saratoga, Port Edwards and Armenia. The "Give $10" campaign is about a whole lot more than raising money. It's about believing in your hometown, and in those who live here now, and those who will live here in the future. The Nekoosa Area Fund needs your support today.
