July 24, 2006 - You can create your own future

By: Melissa Loken, for the Daily Tribune

Note: This is the latest column providing an update on the activities of the Community Progress Initiative, a three-year effort designed to build optimism and economic development in the areas of south Wood and northern Adams counties.

The Community Progress Initiative is very proud to offer a variety of programming to help those individuals interested in starting their own business. Our Industry Clusters include a cluster that is devoted entirely to helping create new businesses and helping existing businesses to grow.

A sampling of the professions represented by the Small Business Cluster members includes: educational professionals, professional lenders, legal professionals, account professionals, marketing professionals, service professionals and small business professionals. All of these people volunteer their time to nurture the growth of businesses in our community.

The Small Business Cluster is making an Entrepreneurial Boot Camp available to our community members Aug. 3 through Aug. 7. This provides the opportunity for citizens with an interest in small business ownership to receive guidance and advice from professionals. One of the greatest benefits of this program is the relationship that develops between our presenters and the participants in the Boot Camp.

Our presenters do a wonderful job of making everyone feel comfortable in the process of business planning. There is the opportunity to present your business idea in a safe, confidential environment and receive practical advice on how to move that idea forward. Participants leave the Boot Camp with specific strategic goals for the operation of their business. This wonderful program would not be possible without the generous donation of time, support and expertise from the Small Business Cluster members.

Another component of the support system for businesses that the Small Business Cluster has developed is the Business 2 Business Club. The club provides business owners and their employees with the opportunity to have their questions answered by experts in various areas of business management. Many business owners have been helped in areas such as technology, budgeting, marketing, human resources and taxes. Watch for information in the Daily Tribune about our September Meeting.

The Small Business Cluster is also in the process of planning an exciting event for current business owners. This will be a great opportunity to access ideas, advice and momentum to move forward. Watch for more information soon!

Please contact Melissa Loken at 422-4856 with any ideas for topics your business would like addressed at any of the above events. If you have any questions about any aspect of small business operations or start up please feel free to contact me at the number above or e-mail me at biz@heartofwi.com.
