August 30, 2006 - Berrymans concert will support Nekoosa Progress

By: Ruth Moody, for the Daily Tribune

NEKOOSA -- The Nekoosa Area Progress Fund Committee -- part of the Community Progress Initiative -- has had a very busy summer and it shows. In June, the Progress Fund received a $2,000 donation from the Nekoosa Lions Club. Through the generosity of the Barker Mead Fund through Community Foundation of South Wood County, all donations, including the Nekoosa Lions Club contribution, are being matched dollar for dollar up to $20,000.

"This is a wonderful gift from the Nekoosa Lions Club -- a contribution that will benefit the entire area!" said Ruth Moody of the Nekoosa Area Progress Fund Committee.

The Nekoosa Fund Committee also has launched the "Gimme $10" campaign. If everyone in the Nekoosa area (including the townships of Saratoga, Port Edwards and Armenia) gives at least $10, the Nekoosa Progress Fund will meet its goal of $20,000 by Dec. 31. This amount will be matched by the Barker Mead Fund through Community Foundation of South Wood County and bring the total endowment fund balance to $40,000.

Grants from the endowment fund are used for unique community improvement projects. Examples of projects already supported by the Nekoosa Area Progress Fund include the addition of a water fountain along the bike trail in Nekoosa and the upgrading of Wakely Bridge, a historical landmark.

Please consider making a donation to support this unique fund that benefits the entire Nekoosa area.

Put on your toe-tapping shoes for the lively and funny twosome of Lou and Peter Berryman; they're coming to Nekoosa High School at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 15. The Berrymans have played everywhere from local venues to the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Garrison Keillor of "A Prairie Home Companion" says they are "a couple of wonderful writers," and Tom Paxton says "They don't come any funnier."

Don't miss this opportunity to hear the Berrymans and their unique blend of musical comedy, cabaret and folk music. The Hoopla Band will open the show and put the audience in the mood for one very enjoyable evening.

Tickets are $10 in advance; $12 at the door. Tickets are available at Daly Drug, Arts Council of South Wood County, Beavers Variety Store and Nekoosa Port Edwards State Bank -- Rome Branch.

If there are tickets remaining on Tuesday, they may be purchased at the Nekoosa Public Schools administration office. All proceeds from this event will go to the Nekoosa Area Progress Fund.

The Nekoosa Area Progress Fund Committee is working diligently to strengthen the community they call home. Please support their efforts through a donation to the "Gimme 10" campaign and by attending the Lou and Peter Berryman performance on Sept. 15.
