August 21, 2006 - Fun Fest 2006 offers variety of activities to all

By: Leslie Arendt, for the Daily Tribune

Great things are happening in Port Edwards from Friday through Sunday.

The Port Progress Team of the Community Progress Initiative is pleased to bring you the Port Edwards Fund Fest 2006. The festivities begin Friday with the season opener for the Blackhawk football team as they face off against Independence. Kickoff is at 4pm.

The game will end, but the evening still will be young. Join us for “Prime Time Port Edwards,” our first free outdoor movie night in many years. Some of you may remember that outdoor movies were held next to the town hall and the local root beer stand back in the late 1940s. Well, our committee decided we were long overdue and it was time to bring back that popular tradition.

We hope to be able to show several movies each year, with possibly another one coming this fall. On Friday, the movie will be shown at 8:30pm on the west side of the YMCA youth building. The family-oriented feature will be announced that evening, but be sure to come and see “what it feels like to be a kid again.”

Refreshments will be available. Don’t forget your blanket or chair. And finally, take a chance to win The Best Seat in the House – comfortable seating right in the front row.

On Saturday, start your day right with the Strides for Kids 5K Fund Run/Walk. The Run starts at the UMCA and continues through Port Edwards, including our beautiful bike trail. Registration is from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Contact the YMCA at 887-3240 for more information. This is a fundraiser or the YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign, which provides scholarships to children for YMCA youth programs.

The final event in our Fun Fest weekend is our second annual Car Show and Craft Show to be held from 10 am to 5 pm Sunday. Last year was our inaugural event, and this year is already shaping up to be bigger and better. New this year will be approximately 25 craft vendors and a farmers’ market. Plenty of refreshments will be served by local churches and community groups.

Children’s activities such as face painting and various games also will be included. At the Car Show, trophies will be awarded and ash plaques given out to show participants, including the popular People’s Choice Award. This free event is being held in the Edwards-Alexander Park (behind the YMCA). The municipal swimming pool will be open and available for no admission fee, including the wading pool for the little ones.

So as you can see, fun can be had by all at the Port Edwards Fun Fest. Come and see what Port Edwards, our “River Village,” has to offer. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
