Breaking News November 6, 2006 - Salute the Porters By: Marshall Buehler, for the Daily Tribune Congratulations are in order for the Port Edwards Progress Fund. The Port Edwards Progress Fund was the first of the seven local communities to reach its $20,000 goal. This goal was reached through the generosity of local donors, a matching opportunity provided by the Veneman family and the hard work of the Port Edwards Progress Fund Committee. The $20,000 raised now has been matched by the Barker Mead Fund through Community Foundation of South Wood County. Bear in mind that this is an endowed fund, and the money is invested and will remain invested in the fund forever; however, we are free to spend a portion of the income that is generated by the investment. The income is spent through grants given to local projects. Any group working on a community improvement project is welcome to submit a grant application to receive funds. In the past, the committee that is made up of local residents has provided grants to support a village informational brochure, a Port Edwards Fun Night & Kiddie Karnival and a free family movie night. We encourage you to submit your request for grant funds. The process is simple. You can get a grant application form at the Village Office or by visiting www.progressinitiative.com. Fill out the form and submit it to the local fund committee. These funds are meant to support community improvement projects that make Port Edwards a great place to live and visit. And please keep in mind that the purpose of the fund is to provide a permanent source of money for future generations. If you are interested in providing perpetual, simple and effective support for future improvement projects in our village, then a contribution to the Port Edwards Progress Fund would be greatly appreciated. All gifts, large and small, are important and are tax deductible. We also encourage you to think about your community when making estate plans. The Port Edwards Progress Fund Committee thanks all who have supported the fund and look forward to seeing some great grant applications in the future. For more information on the Port Edwards Fund, call Community Foundation of South Wood County at 423-3863. A local progress fund is available in each of our seven local communities -- Nekoosa area, Pittsville area, Port Edwards, Rome, Rudolph, Vesper area and Wisconsin Rapids area. The purpose of your local community fund and the Community Progress Initiative is to keep money local and create more vibrant communities. It's a grassroots effort, and it's up to local citizens to make it happen. Visit www.progressinitiative.com for more information. |
