November 9, 2006 - Congratulations Rudolph

By: Mary Olson, for the Daily Tribune

RUDOLPH -- The Community Foundation of South Wood County extends a great big congratulations to the Rudolph community. Volunteer members of the Rudolph Progress Fund have reached their goal of raising $20,000 for their community. This amount will be matched dollar for dollar by the Barker Mead Fund, through Community Foundation of South Wood County.

"This is a real testament to the dedication of the volunteers and the donors to their community," said Kelly Lucas, president and chief executive officer of the Community Foundation. "Citizens of Rudolph want to see their community thrive for generations to come."

Volunteer members of the Rudolph Progress Fund Committee are quick to point out this was a community-wide effort.

"We really need to thank each and every one who donated to the fund," said Jeff Hartman, chairman of the Rudolph Progress Fund Committee. "Specifically the town of Rudolph and the village of Rudolph, who each donated $5,000. But it was gifts both large and small that allowed the goal to be reached."

Businesses like Bank-A-Count Corp., B-Z Rentals, Farmers and Merchants Bank, Images Custom Embroidery, Pagels Auction Service, Safe-Way Bus Transit, Solarus and Gerald M. Voelker, D.D.S., see the importance of the Rudolph Progress Fund and chose to support it. Local organizations like Rudolph Little League Association, Rudolph Moravian Church, Rudolph Old Tractor Club, Rudolph PTS and Rudolph River Rovers Snowmobile Club see great opportunity in the fund and chose to support it.

More than 50 local residents chose to support the Rudolph Progress Fund because it was specifically for their community.

"It's a good feeling to give money directly to your community -- money that will be benefiting your hometown long after you're gone," said Kathy Hartjes, member of the Rudolph Progress Fund Committee.

Money donated to the fund is placed in an endowment fund, the principal of the fund never is spent; it is "endowed" and available for growth in perpetuity. As the account earns interest and dividends during time, a portion of the earnings is distributed annually in the form of grants. The Rudolph Progress Fund, made up of Rudolph citizens, reviews grant applications and, based upon grant guidelines, decides which proposals to fund.

"Seeing the success of the Rudolph Progress Fund reinforces what we all know about our area. Local people always keep a special place for their hometown," Lucas said.

There are seven local community funds: Nekoosa, Pittsville, Port Edwards, Rome, Rudolph, Vesper and Wisconsin Rapids. All seven of these funds are working to reach the $20,000 goal before the Dec. 31 deadline. The Barker Mead match is available until that date.
