December 25, 2006 - Residents push progress in their communities

By: Traci Stinebrink, for the Daily Tribune

The year 2006 will come to a close in six short days -- but what a year it's been.

Residents of Rome and South Wood County, through the Community Progress Initiative, have been busy volunteering their time throughout the year in a multitude of ways -- all with the goal of making our community the best it can be. For example, in April, the Nekoosa Area Progress Fund supported the Grassy Waters Nature Preserve in Nekoosa. Fund chairwoman Ruth Moody was on hand to help cut the ribbon on the preserve's opening day.

In June, more than 20 residents organized and volunteered their time at the second annual Community Picnic that drew more than 300 people to the Grand Rapids Lions Club for an afternoon of activities, entertainment and great food. This fun-filled, family event was supported by the Wisconsin Rapids Area Progress Fund.

In September, the Rudolph Progress Fund supported Rudolph's sesquicentennial celebration, which included a kickball tournament, craft sale, entertainment, parade and much more.

These are just a few examples of the activities and projects supported by your seven local Progress Funds during 2006. Progress Funds through Community Foundation of South Wood County exist to support unique community improvement projects in your hometown -- as decided by local residents. What kind of projects would you like to see take place in your community? Tell your fund representatives. Visit progressinitiative.com or cfswc.org for information.

Time is running out. Your donation to your local progress fund will be matched dollar-for-dollar, thanks to a matching challenge from the Barker Mead Fund, up to $20,000. But, time is running out for the matching gift; this generous offer is available only until Dec. 31.

Please act quickly. You may donate to a fund at any time, but if you contribute by Dec. 31, your gift will double. Mail your contribution to CFSWC, 478 E. Grand Ave., Wisconsin Rapids WI 54494, or donate online at cfswc.org.

On behalf of all those involved with the Community Progress Initiative, we wish you a very happy holiday season.
