February 7, 2007 - Contributors help progress fund exceed goal

By Jane Anderson and Dr. John Thompson, for the Daily Tribune

NEKOOSA -- The Nekoosa Area Progress Fund Committee thanks all contributors from Nekoosa and the towns of Saratoga, Armenia and Port Edwards for their financial support that surpassed the fund's goal of $20,000.

An amazing number of 158 donations totaling $24,026 contributed by 138 individuals, families, businesses and government agencies far exceeded our expectations. Many gave smaller amounts and all were appreciated. The largest donations of $4,000 was given by the Nekoosa Lions Club and $2,500 by the city of Nekoosa.

With the dollar matching from the Barker Mead Fund through the South Wood County Community Foundation, the fund now totals $42,000. In a future publication of the Daily Tribune and Community Foundation annual report, all of the contributors will be acknowledged and thanked.

Remember that the Nekoosa Area Progress Fund is an endowed fund -- the principal is never spent, only the interest is dispersed annually in the form of grants for projects to benefit the Nekoosa area. In the past year, grants have been given toward the veterans memorial in Riverside Park, a drinking fountain along the bike trail, repairs on historic Wakely bridge and the grassy waters preserve. If you have a project that would benefit the Nekoosa area, call a committee member or the South Wood County Community Foundation. We hope that with your continued support, the fund will grow year and year. Remember the progress fund when you plan your yearly charitable giving. Help to plan the seed to build a strong and vibrant community.

The fund committee members have moved our community forward and we thank them for our time and effort. The committee chaired by Ruth Moody includes Carol Arendt, Keith Clary, Jane Anderson, Bob Birkhauser and John Thompson.

Contributed by Jane Anderson and Dr. John Thompson.
