February 12, 2007 - Cluster tours spark idea, new print process

By Carol Davis, for the Daily Tribune

When you're on a journey, make sure you celebrate your successes along the way.

The Paper and Forest Products Cluster is proud to recognize the success of our team member, Dave Pryor, owner of Quality Plus Printing. Pryor accepted the "Entrepreneur of the Year" award at the Heart of Wisconsin Business & Economic Alliance's Annual Dinner on Feb. 2.

Pryor recently remodeled his building, installing the area's first flexographic printing press. Now, businesses like Urban Processing -- and others -- can have their labels printed locally.

Installing a new piece of equipment sounds like a simple thing, right? But Cluster team members knew Pryor's success came after two years of patient and persistent research, discussion and planning. He never gave up.

Two years ago, Pryor joined our cluster as part of the Community Progress Initiative. Out of a study tour to Appleton, discussions with Corenso leaders and a tour of Stora Enso's papermaking operations came the inspiration to look into flexographic printing. Pryor found a niche, and pursued it.

Cluster team members supported Pryor where we could, be it by helping set up conversations with area business leaders, or just by being a sounding board for his monthly progress reports. Members of other industry clusters shared their expertise as well. A grant from Wisconsin's Department of Commerce paid for his training to become certified in flexographic printing.

Pryor is at the beginning of his journey as a flexographic printer. On behalf of the Paper & Forest Products Cluster team here's to many more successes for him.

Carol Davis is a member of the Paper & Forest Products Industry Cluster. She is director of community and executive support at Community Foundation of South Wood County.
