May 14, 2007 - Port Edwards plans fun for the whole family

By Leslie Arendt, for the Daily Tribune

Spring is upon us, and summer is just around the corner. This means that family activities are definitely getting geared up for the season in the village of Port Edwards.

First up is our annual village-wide garage sale to be held Saturday. The whole village comes alive with shoppers and many great deals to be had by all. The Port Edwards Business Council has been a major sponsor of this event for many years.

The Port Progress Team is getting on board by creating a scavenger hunt during the sale. Prizes will be given out to the first contestant to gather all the items on the list. The grand prize will be $50 and several other prizes will be given out as well. More information can be found at the information booths sponsored by the Progress team and located on the day of the sale at Aubey Park and in front of Edgewater Haven Nursing Home.

Of course, lots of food and refreshments can be found throughout the village that day. The information booths will have maps and "cheat sheets" of all the food stands and activities going on in the village Saturday.

Also coming this summer is "Prime Time Port Edwards," our summer series of free outdoor movie nights. Our first showing, to be held June 12, will be "Shrek," an animated fairy tale about a big green monster and his princess. Then, on July 12, we'll show "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire." Catch this fourth Harry Potter movie the night before the fifth one comes out this summer.

All movies will be held at dusk at the Edwards-Alexander Park. Concessions will be available. Don't forget your lawn chairs and blankets! These movie nights are made possible with the generous donations of our corporate sponsors, Nekoosa Port Edwards State Bank, Domtar Industries Inc. and ERCO Worldwide Inc.

Mark your calendars for our main event for the summer: The Port Edwards Fun Fest, Aug. 24 to 26. The event starts out Friday afternoon with the high school football game, followed by our third outdoor movie night featuring "American Grafitti."

The car theme continues throughout the weekend with our first classic car cruise and street dance Saturday. The YMCA will have its annual fun run/walk that morning. Then on Sunday, the third annual car show and craft show will be held. More details will come on this entire event as the date draws closer.

So, please join us in Port Edwards, our "river village," for one, or all of the family friendly events that are coming this spring and summer.
