Breaking News August 6, 2007 - Fun Fest returns with old favorites, new offerings By: Leslie Arendt, for the Daily Tribune PORT EDWARDS -- It is hard to believe that it is already August, but summer still has some great things to offer, especially in Port Edwards. Be sure to mark the weekend of Aug. 24 to 26 on your calendar. This marks the return of the Port Edwards Family Fun Fest. Now in its third year, the Fun Fest, proudly brought to you by the Port Progress Team, will start Friday night with the home opener for the Blackhawks. The football game starts at 4 p.m. and is a great way to spend a late summer afternoon. Following the game, make your way to Edwards-Alexander Park and join us for "Prime Time Port Edwards," our outdoor movie series. The Fun Fest is taking on a car show theme this year and in keeping with that, we'll be showing the 1950s classic "American Graffiti." Come early, have a picnic in the park and sit back and enjoy some classic music from the '50s and '60s. Concessions will be plentiful; bring your chairs and blankets. The movie will show around dusk on the back side of the YMCA Youth building. On Saturday morning, the John E. Alexander South Wood County YMCA will host its Fun Run. You can choose 5K or 10K and enjoy our beautiful trails throughout Port Edwards. The run starts at 9 a.m. with registration between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Call the YMCA at 887-3240 for more information. New events to the Fun Fest this year start Saturday afternoon. A classic car and motorcycle cruise will be held at 3 p.m. Registration ($5/vehicle) is at 2 p.m. on Market Avenue. The cruise will go 40 miles through Port Edwards (including a cruise through Edgewater Haven Nursing Home) and Nekoosa with a stop at Glacial Lake Cranberries for refreshments. After the cruise, head back to downtown Port Edwards for a street dance with live music by the blues band Deep Water Reunion. Food will be provided by the restaurant Engine Company 54 along with beverages from our volunteer fire department. Entertainment for the kids will be provided by the Boys and Girls Club of Port Edwards. Also the Teen Pulse Center on Market Street will be open from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. during the street dance. Aug. 26 brings the final event to our Fun Fest weekend, our third annual Car Show and Craft Sale to be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also added this year is a tractor show. There will be plenty of activities for the whole family: games, face painting and musical entertainment. Refreshments will be served by local community groups and churches. Trophies will be awarded at the car show (including the popular "people's choice award") and dash plaques will be given out to show participants. This free event also will be held at the Edwards-Alexander Park (behind the YMCA). Located in the park is the municipal swimming pool, which will be open and available for no admission fee, including the wading pool for the little ones. What a great way to cool off and end up the summer. If you have any questions about any of these events, call 887-3020 for cruise information, 887-4393 for car show info and 887-3135 for craft sale and tractor show information. The community of Port Edwards and the members of the Port Progress Team look forward to seeing you at the Third annual Port Edwards Family Fun Fest. Leslie Arendt is a Port Progress Team member. |
