October 27, 2008 - Make recycling a priority in our community

For the Daily Tribune

We at Express Recycling are very impressed with the active part this community has taken to secure a future of economic and environmental prosperity. The Heart of Wisconsin Business and Economic Alliance and the Community Foundation of Greater South Wood County have taken very proactive roles to look to our future and make sure that we sustain a growing community. Citizens for a Clean, Green & Welcoming Community is just one group that has grown out of the work of the Community Progress Initiative. Express Recycling has been excited to be part of this.

At Express Recycling, our beginnings are humble. About 5 years ago, we started as one shop buying aluminum cans. Since then, we have added two other locations and a multitude of products. Our vision is to make recycling so convenient and easy that nothing with recycling value gets thrown into our landfill. We have much work to do to achieve this goal, but we continue growing.

Our newest service is confidential paper shredding. The threat of identity theft has grown in recent times, and one way to decrease the risk is by shredding documents and junk mail. As a result, we will begin to offer free confidential shredding services to residents of our community starting in December. Details will be posted soon on our website at www.expressrecycling.biz or call 423-4999.

We also have a free paper/cardboard drop-off at all three of our locations. In my small household of 3 people, we accumulate about 50-60 pounds of scrap paper per month just by holding onto our “junk” mail, product packaging, computer printer waste, and publications. I was amazed to see how much I had thrown away in the past!

You may be surprised at some of the other products we accept: plastics #1-7, aluminum, brass, copper, wire, stainless, lead, electric motors, car batteries, incandescent/fluorescent lights, alkaline and rechargeable batteries, Christmas tree lights, ballasts, appliances, computers, keyboards/mouses, electronics, monitors, TV’s, microwaves, speakers, printers, copiers, and more.

Express Recycling partners with South Wood County Humane Society to assist them with fundraising efforts through their aluminum can collection sites. We also have worked with classes at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point and local elementary schools to provide field trips and information. We would enjoy working with other interested schools.

Express Recycling supports five families with full time employment and has 3 part-time employees. As we grow, we hope to contribute additionally to our community by providing more jobs. We are participating in the Community Progress Initiative study tour to Finland from October 24 through November 2 to see how they have transformed their economy using industry clusters, education, and technology. We hope to use this information here at home to help our community achieve new goals.

I encourage you to join Citizens for a Clean, Green & Welcoming Community. This group meets monthly and is made up of a broad representation of our community, including schools, municipalities, local businesses, environmental experts, the League of Women Voters, and concerned citizens, among others. Our next meeting is Tuesday, November 4, at 4 p.m. at Hotel Mead.
