July 29, 2004 - Rapids natives share visions for city's future

By Colin Atagi, Daily Tribune Staff

The Wisconsin Rapids Community Progress Initiative Make It Happen rally, originally set for Tuesday, was tentatively rescheduled for Sept. 21. About 25 people showed up to the Tuesday gathering. During the rallies, organized by the Heart of Wisconsin Business & Economic Alliance and the Community Foundation of South Wood County, residents have been asked questions about their visions for their community. The following are the responses of three people interviewed by the Daily Tribune at the meeting.

Cathy Anhalt, 47, of Wisconsin Rapids

What brought you to the community? I was born and raised in Wisconsin Rapids and I worked in Illinois, but I returned here when I was married.

What do you like about your community? I like the natural beauty in the area and the fact we're centrally located in the state. I think there are a lot of potential opportunities for growth here. Also we have good recreational activity.

What would you like to see in your community's future? I'd like to see more jobs that would attract people and to retain people. I'd like to see a continuation of a lot of good things going on and also to see some fine dining and shopping opportunities.

Nick Wash, 18, Wisconsin Rapids

What brought you to the community? I was born and raised here. I just got done with high school.

What do you like about your community? With Wisconsin Rapids, there are a lot of opportunities that people don't know about. They're there if you look for them. You can just go up to people and talk to them and they'd be willing to help you.

What would you like to see in your community's future? I'd like to see the community truly come together as one. By coming together first, the restaurants and the stores - they'll come in the long run.

Eldean Walling of Wisconsin Rapids

What brought you to the community? My job brought me here. I work with Mid-State Technical College as academic dean. I've been with the college for 24 years, but I'm originally from Beaver Dam.

What do you like about your community? I like the sense of community. I like the willingness of the people to come together for the common cause.

What would you like to see in your community's future? A sense of having industry that's not exclusively manufacturing, but utilizing technology and a lot of high skilled community members.
