Breaking News December 31, 2004 - Progress funds need your help Letter to the Editor, Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune As you may know, the Community Progress Initiative has been active in an effort to make our community an even better place in which to live. Meetings have been held throughout south Wood County during the past several months. The involvement on the part of our citizens has been overwhelming, and it is exciting to see the common positive focus evolve from each of the committees. We are well on our way to a successful initiative, and we need your help. Seven individual Community Progress Funds have been set up through the outstanding generosity of former residents Ruth and Harley Barker and Gilbert and Jaylee Mead. Nekoosa, Pittsville, Port Edwards, Rome, Rudolph, Vesper and the Wisconsin Rapids area currently have funds set up at the Community Foundation of South Wood County. The Barker Mead Fund has agreed to provide matching gifts on a dollar-for-dollar basis to each of these groups, up to a maximum of $20,000. For example, a $25 contribution from an individual or business would become $50. The purpose of these permanent community funds is to support unique progress/community improvement opportunities within each city, village or town as identified by citizens of each area. For example, we might receive grant requests to support local arts, culture, recreation, tourism or to facilitate business growth and development, to name a few possibilities. We represent the Wisconsin Rapids Area committee and have met several times to evaluate what needs to be accomplished. We have set a goal of $70,000, which would include the matching gift. We are excited about the numerous opportunities in our area and each of you to become involved. Your tax-deductible contribution, sent directly to the Community Foundation of South Wood County, will make a huge difference and we look forward to your involvement. Our committee members are: Jackie Bredl-Dietrich, Dan Huotari, Gary Rosencrans, Lorraine Schmutzer and me. If you have questions, call the Community Foundation at 423-3863. Thank you, and we hope you have a wonderful holiday season. TOM MARSHALL for the Wisconsin Rapids Area Community Progress Fund Wisconsin Rapids |
